There’s so much going on in this character’s mind and heart, especially in the twisty final act, with which Adams could have “gone big,” but it’s actually one of the more subtle and internal sci-fi movie performances that I’ve ever seen. Villeneuve’s vision is not particularly CGI-heavy, allowing Adams to work in a way that feels relatable.
This is a movie that gets too sterile at times, but Adams is always there to ground it. Throughout, Adams imbues Louise with a quiet, effective emotional undercurrent that’s essential to the film’s success.
The opening scenes detail the birth, brief life and death of a child. Will man’s protective instinct kick in before its science and language leaders can figure out a way to stop it? As she gets closer and closer to being able to convey that crucial question in a way that it (and its answer) will be understood, the world’s uneasiness continues. The Heptapods, as they’re eventually called, speak in sounds that echo whale noises at times, but Louise quickly learns that written language is the way to communicate, even deciphering the complex way the interstellar tourists write. Despite what they’re telling the public-which is not much of anything at first-the governments of the world have made first contact with the creatures inside, beings that look vaguely like some higher power merged an octopus with a giant hand. It is more about grief, time, communication and compassion than it is warp speed, and it’s a film that asks questions. Joining films like “ Gravity,” “ Interstellar” and “ The Martian” is Denis Villeneuve’s ambitious and moving “Arrival,” a movie that’s about the day the universe changed forever but becomes more focused on a single story even as it’s expanding its worldwide narrative. Over the last few years, we’ve seen the genre used not only to examine the power of space travel or a post-apocalyptic future but as a way to address common humanity more than futuristic adventure stories. Could one man really stop such things from happening? Zane knows something is going on and the deeper he digs the more we find out. The story has it's own set of implausibilities, but things move at such a pace that there isn't much time to question them. Soon we start to see elements straight out of the X Files. As Zane takes it upon himself to get to the bottom of things and find out who's involved and to what lengths they'll go to suppress everything. The Arrival is one part use your mind, two parts conspiracy theory. What was it? WHO was it? Not letting the subject go gets him fired from his job and deeper and deeper he journeys into the paranoia. One day watching the satellites some anomaly passes his screen.
A smart, but soon-to-be paranoid astrophysicist who has the slithery Godian (Ron Silver) for a boss. Which are never terribly realistic, but on their own terms, entertain. It is however one more of those 'one man saves the world' flicks. While the jury is still out on that, I will say it's not stupid either. Some people have called 'The Arrival' a thinking man's science fiction movie. It's a commercial." A commercial which it turned out for one of the large multi-billion dollar phone companies. "I just missed the start of the movie." It wasn't three seconds after that realization that I had another one. When I finally reached the theater - the large screen was engrossed by a huge satellite disk and there was some guy talking. Then I had to go through the concession stand crowd. The movie was slated to start ten minutes past the hour and I didn't arrive there until five after. I was a little bit late getting to the theater to see The Arrival.
